Seasoned, sauced ground beef on a bun makes such a great, quick weekday meal that there’s only one way to top these Easy Italian-Style Sloppy Joes: with cheese. The recipe for the beef mixture comes together quickly in one pan and is piled high on soft rolls before being topped with a sprinkle or a slice of cheese. The heat from the meat mixture melts the cheese just enough to make every bite of these Italian-style sloppy joes gooey and delicious—the ideal comfort food. You can also serve the high- protein beef mixture in tacos, over pasta, or use it to make a new spin on stuffed peppers.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef or ground turkey
  • 3 1/2 cups Prego® Traditional Italian Sauce (a little more than half of a 45-ounce jar)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 12 Pepperidge Farm® Soft White Hamburger Buns
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (about 8 ounces) or 12 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  • Tips

    • To make 24 servings, adjust the amounts as follows: 4 pounds beef, 45-ounce jar sauce, 3 tablespoons Worcestershire, 1 tablespoon each garlic powder and onion powder, 4 1/2 cups cheese and 24 hamburger buns.  Cook in an 8-quart saucepot.
    • The doubled recipe makes a big batch.  You can freeze half for later or use any leftovers to top baked potatoes, fold into tortillas, fill and bake in bell peppers or just serve hot over cooked rice.  The possibilities are endless!
    • To make 6 servings, adjust the amounts as follows: 1 pound beef, 14-ounce jar sauce (about 1 1/2 cups), 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire, 1 teaspoon each garlic powder and onion powder, 1 cup cheese and 6 hamburger buns.  Cook in a 3-quart saucepan.
  • Step 1

Season the beef with salt and pepper.  Cook the beef in a 4-quart saucepan over medium-high heat until browned, stirring often to separate meat. Pour off any fat.

  • Step 2

Stir in the sauce, Worcestershire, garlic powder and onion powder and cook over medium-high heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  • Step 3

Divide the beef mixture among the buns.  Top with the cheese and serve hot.
